Tuning 1.4 MG ZR (common upgrades)

I've seen a few people asking about tuning the 1.4 MG ZR 105. I'll give a run down of the basics without spending huge amounts of money. First off, the 1.4 is fairy nippy in standard form so don't expect huge gains. Even by modern standard ~103bhp out of a 1400cc NASP engine (ie non forced induction engine) is still quite impressive!

This is just my personal opinion, but here is the route I would take.

    1. Exhaust System

A full exhaust system will get the engine breathing a lot better and open up a bit more power. When I say 'full system' this means manifold, Cat pipe (on a ZR this is part of downpipe), centre pipe and backbox. Here are your upgrade options...

    -
(cheap option) fit a full MG ZR 160 exhaust setup on your car, this will bolt straight onto your 1.4.

    - (more expensive option) fit a full Janspeed exhaust system, you can buy them from PTP here: http://www.ptp-ltd.co.uk/shop/50/mg_...tems/index.htm

    2. Induction Kit

A good enclosed induction kit will also help the engine breath a bit better or if money is tight then just a panel filter.. I would personelly reccommend the following....

    Enclosed kits

    - ITG Maxogen (the best): http://www.ptp-ltd.co.uk/shop/23_21/...ion_system.htm

    - BMC CDA (watch out for fakes on ebay):

    - Pipercross Viper: http://www.ptp-ltd.co.uk/shop/276_21...pipercross.htm

    Panel Filters

    - ITG: http://www.ptp-ltd.co.uk/shop/114_21...air_filter.htm

    - Pipercross: http://www.ptp-ltd.co.uk/shop/291_21...ter_(foam).htm

    3. 52mm throttle body

Fitting a throttle body from a ZR160 will also help the engine breath a bit better, they can be picked up used for around £30-£50. or NEW here: http://www.ptp-ltd.co.uk/shop/14_21/...ottle_body.htm

Don't bother fitting a 52mm throttle body unless you plan to remap, it is a waste of money.

    4. Remap

MAKE SURE THIS IS THE LAST THING YOU DO!!! A reputable mapper such as Z+F tuning will alter your ECU software to make the most of out of your performance modifications. It is not essential but it will definitely add more power and improve the cars drivability.

    Check there website here: http://www.zandf-tuning.co.uk

***Obviously a lot more can be done if you have deeper pockets, but these upgrades are basic and could see up to 125bhp (I'd expect around 115-120 realistically though). If you are on a budget then shop around on the use market (on here, ebay etc) as the parts can be picked a lot cheaper!***

I will say the 52mm throttle body (on its own) is a myth. You need the VVC inlet manifold to gain any advantage of the extra 4mm and a ported cylinder head to get its full potential.
