I had this problem on mine and like Hyphon said it was inlet manifold gasket, Iirc there where 2 gaskets for the inlet and came to less £20

There all mk1's and all turbo are 2.0l, once you put them right then usually don't get anymore problems, we picked them up towing with a mg lol, none are for sale at the moment, its good to save them...

I badly need a whole new exhaust for my t16 as mine is shot ! , need to get new one made but dont no where from only place that comes to mind is powerflow ?
