I have a 53 plate zr 160, 90k miles and the drive shafts are rattling a bit now, I***8217;m going to replace the front suspension too but I***8217;m struggling to get hold of some new shafts...

Just to seal the thread up for anyone else's benefit. The steam cleared after a tank of two of fuel and some wynns fuel treatment, head gasket still running fine after 1k+ miles. The weird idle...

Thank you for the above info, it's quite a history this engine series has had. Even a bit of pride seeping out that it's an engine with a real problem to tolerate not just a daft electrical/sensor...

Update:

Re torqued the headbolts all round progressively from 50 to 65ft/lb which did turn out to be 45° or there abouts. Reassembled the engine and ran it for around 1-2 minutes. No steam...

The bolts are german made, they're not anything special just oem spec and seem of decent quality.

The cause could well be anything at the moment but I think I'll start with a retorque, maybe...

In fact, this confirms my suspicions in the above post.

Progress update:

Just whipped the rocker cover off and with a known good torque wrench ( my dads an aircraft engineer so I borrowed his as it's well calibrated and easy to read the values...

I'm wondering if it's the torque process or potentially the head saver shim.

When I took the old gasket out that I was originally replacing, it was a MLS gasket but had no shim on it. Its done 50k...
