Thinking of a diesel......

Hi folks, I just wondered if there might be a bit of advice available on a potential purchase.

There is a yellow diesel ZR (2001) 10 minutes from where I live. It has been out of MOT for a couple of months and has been replaced by a 1.4 5 door ZR due to grandkids, etc.

I went to see the car yesterday and it is ok, a bit of paintwork needed here and there, a bloody good clean and needs a new tyre which the owner is going to sort out. The car starts and runs happily enough but the following issues have been noted:

The EML is on and has been for a while.
The engine produces copious amounts of black smoke when revved.

I'm thinking EGR and MAF issues. I am not that familiar with diesels and would appreciate some advice please

It is available for only a couple of hundred quid and I thought it would be worth a punt.

Had same issue with mine, turned out to be the MAF sensor. Very underrated car, I can only comment on the 115 version, but it's quick, powerful and very economical. Not quite as much fun as the 160...still miss mine years later!
